Why Door Installation Is Not a Simple Job

A door looks like a straightforward swap. It is not, and this is where most cheap installations go wrong.

Openings are rarely square

Houses settle. The opening that was perfectly square when the home was built usually is not any more. If a door is hung in an out of square opening without correcting for it, it will drag on one side, show a wider gap on the other, and the latch will never line up cleanly. Fitting the door to the actual opening is the skill in this trade.

The threshold decides whether water gets in

The bottom of an exterior door is where rain drives in. If the threshold and sill are not set and sealed correctly, water runs underneath into the subfloor. You will not see it for a year or two, and then the floor near the door goes soft and the frame starts to rot from the bottom up. This is one of the most common and most expensive door problems we get called out for.

Security lives in the frame, not the door

Most doors that get forced open do not break. The frame does. A strike plate held by short screws into thin trim will give way with one hard kick, no matter how solid the door or how good the deadbolt. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb are a small detail that makes an enormous difference, and it is exactly the sort of thing a rushed installer skips.

A poorly sealed door costs you every month

The gap around a door is bigger than most people realise. If it is not insulated and weather stripped properly, you are heating and cooling the porch. A door you can feel a draft through in January is doing that all year.

Prehung or Slab? What the Difference Means for You

This comes up in almost every quote, so here it is in plain language.
A slab door is the door panel on its own. You reuse the existing frame and hinges. It costs less and works well when the frame is square, solid and in good shape, and you simply want a new door panel.
A prehung door comes already mounted in a new frame, with the hinges fitted and the threshold attached. It costs more but it replaces the frame too, which is the right call when the jamb is rotted, split from a forced entry, or so far out of square that no panel will ever hang properly in it.
We check the frame during the consultation and tell you which one your opening actually needs. Fitting a new slab into a bad frame is money wasted, and putting in a full prehung when the frame is perfectly good is money you did not need to spend.

Precise measurement

Width, height and diagonal, plus the swing direction and the wall thickness. Getting the hand of the door right matters, because a door that opens the wrong way into a hallway or against a light switch is a daily annoyance you cannot undo.

Choosing your door

We walk you through material, style, glass and hardware. Fiberglass handles Georgia humidity well and does not warp. Steel is strong and budget friendly. Wood looks beautiful but needs upkeep. We tell you what suits your entry, your exposure to sun and rain, and your budget.
